MINNEAPOLIS–Any spat between New York GOP chair Joseph Mondello and former Gov. George Pataki seems to have been put aside for the sake of party unity, at least temporarily.

Pataki and Mondello have fought for years since Pataki sacked Mondello from his Republican National Committee position to install a loyalist during his final term as governor. Wednesday, however, the two hugged on stage after Mondello introduced him at the New York Delegation’s luncheon, showing no obvious signs of any cold feelings.

Mondello handed Pataki New York delegate credentials “with honor and humility,” and Pataki took the podium by storm, proclaiming, “Let me tell you: I’m back, I’m involved.”

Pataki had spent the last 18 months with a low profile after finishing his third term in the governor’s mansion, but he has spoken to multiple state delegations since the convention opened Monday. On Wednesday, he assailed Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s message of hope and change by saying “It’s change that takes away hope.”

After serving as both a legislator and as governor, Pataki said he learned more in 10 days as governor than he did in 10 years as a legislator, explicitly attacking Obama for what he sees as a lack of experience.

And he said he was “upset” by Obama’s speech to 200,000 supporters in Berlin. “We don’t need a citizen of the world to be president, we need an American hero.”

He answered questions from the news media after his stump speech:

Interview: Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, On Taxes, Palin And Sexism

MINNEAPOLIS–In an exclusive interview with The Chronicle, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray compared governing a town with a population larger than some states, including Alaska, the state of John McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin.

Murray believes the media coverage of Palin shows a “double standard,” comparable to that of how she said Hillary Clinton was treated. And she said property taxes in Hempstead are reaching a breaking point.
