DENVER–Barack Obama holds a 23-point lead amongst voters 18 to 24 years old, according to a new poll of young people released Monday by the Harvard Institute of Politics.

The poll surveyed 1,031 likely young voters, between July 28 and Aug. 12, before Obama chose Joe Biden as his running mate. Obama leads McCain 55 percent to 23 percent, with 13 percent undecided.

The lead is a two-point increase, which the poll’s findings brief calls “virtually unchanged” for Obama since the last time the poll was conducted in April.

About two-thirds of respondents said they were excited about the upcoming election, the poll finds, with more than half of the Obama supporters saying they are willing to volunteer for his campaign.

The poll’s findings were released at a luncheon panel with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) as its featured speaker. Patrick has close ties to Obama: they are friends and share a chief political adviser, David Axelrod. Obama was also accused of lifting some of Patrick’s gubernatorial campaign speeches for his own presidential election campaign.

After telling a story about his chance meeting in Denver International Airport with Rich, a young voter who won the Youtube video contest to meet Obama backstage and have his video shown in Invesco Field at Mile High before Obama delivers his acceptance speech, Patrick said he told Rich: “You are the reason we are here.”

“I believe people are hungry for inspiring positive leadership, not the solution for everybody’s problems,” Patrick said. “I think young people are particularly open to that.”
