Obama Officially Becomes Democratic Presidential Nominee

DENVER–There were reports of tears in the eyes of black leaders on the convention floor as Barack Obama, the son of a black Kenyan man and a white Kansan woman, officially became the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.

After the New York delegation cast its votes for Obama, at 4:48 p.m. local time, Hillary Clinton motioned for the roll call to end and for Obama to receive the nomination by acclamation, or voice vote.

“Let’s declare together in one voice, right here and right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president,” Clinton said.

“I move that Senator Barack Obama of Illinois be selected by this convention by acclamation as the Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” she said, causing the hall to erupt and begin chanting “Hillary! Hillary! Hillary!”

The move comes after Clinton released her delegates earlier in the afternoon at an event in the Colorado Convention Center.
